Sustainability and racial justice are inextricably linked, yet minority voices are still massively underrepresented in the sustainable fashion space. I encourage you to diversify your Instagram feed in every area, including this one – and the plus side to the algorithm is that once you find someone you connect with in this space you’ll be automatically introduced to more to expand your horizons. I’ve listed some of the Black creators and activists that I've found inspirational in further educating myself on what it means to truly live sustainably.

EMMA SLADE EDMONDSON

I met Emma when she was styling for the “Love Not Landfill” pop-up shop and we had a fun time checking out each other’s rail curations for charity as well as each other’s wardrobes (we both LOVE colour and pattern). A hardcore champion of sustainable fashion, Emma’s Instagram is my go-to feed for discovering new and emerging sustainable brands and tips on where to pick up the best secondhand.

TYRONE SCOTT

Tyrone is a campaigner and journalist based in Hackney, East London. Alongside his work as an eco-activist, Tyrone works for Shelter, a housing and homelessness charity, and is currently standing for the Green Party championing a more sustainable approach to life. A self-confessed chocolate lover who is inspired by the youth of today and their interest in sustainability, his fun feed will give you a glimpse into the life of an activist.

WILSON ORYEMA

Wilson is an artist and poet who uses his work to educate and inspire. He is the co-founder of Regenerative Futures, a model for a world built upon the principles of equity, fluidity, and sustainability, and an ambassador for Green Future Project. Wilson recently worked on the documentary How Toxic Are My Clothes, which takes a deep dive into the culture of consumption and its effects on people and the planet.

BRITTANY SIERRA

Brittany is the founder of The Sustainable Fashion Forum — an online platform championing a sustainable approach to living and dressing. Through this platform and her personal feed, Brittany educates her audience on what makes fashion sustainable and ways to move away from fast fashion. Make sure to check out the Sustainable Fashion Forum’s latest event, the Closet of the Future Summit, a day of necessary conversations happening on 29th January.

AJA BARBER

Aja Barber is a writer, personal stylist and style consultant living in South East London. She uses her platform to educate on sustainability issues as well as discussing the challenges of living in the world today. Expect lots of excellent fashion content and regular cat cameos.
