Easy, functional and affordable, the high-street multipack of pants is a classic for a reason. One big problem with these? They often don’t measure up when it comes to sustainability and ethics. Don’t worry, though, I’ve got your replacements covered — here’s a selection of the best eco-friendly knickers for everyday wear made with natural, breathable materials that are good for your body.

ORGANIC BASICS

Organic Basics’ underwear is made using GOTS certified organic cotton* and is certified vegan. They ensure that everyone involved in the manufacturing process is paid and treated fairly for a product that’s kind to people and planet. I love their hipster briefs — neutral and super comfy.

THE NUDE LABEL

The Nude Label design their pieces to be as natural as possible and to be worn like a second skin. They use GOTS certified organic cotton*, manufactured locally in Valencia, Spain (where the brand is based) and ultimately want to design quality underwear which will last a long time.

*GOTS certified organic cotton is cotton which has been certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) — it’s a sure way of knowing that the cotton wasn’t exposed to any pesticides, herbicides or harmful chemicals in the production process and was produced responsibly both socially and consciously when it comes to water and energy use.

There’s no excuse not to wear your underwear until the end of its lifespan and once you have there’s also no excuse to throw it in the bin where it will ultimately end up in a landfill. If your pants are made from 100% natural fibres (i.e. cotton) you can cut them into strips and add them into your compost where they will naturally break down, though do make sure you remove the elastic waistband if they have one. If you don’t compost or don’t have access to a compost bin, then try and find your nearest textile recycling bin (they can usually be found near larger supermarkets) where you can dispose of your underwear (it hopefully goes without saying to make sure it’s clean!) and it can be repurposed to make things like padding for chairs and car seats, cleaning cloths and industrial blankets.
